In 1997, Teck Trail Operations identified an opportunity to enhance its learning environment. Teck Trail Operations invested its resources in an employee-driven learning centre (TLC) to deliver courses, conduct workshops, and design learning paths for its employees. Originally all courses were held on site. Over the years the program grew to include courses and workshops offered primarily at Selkirk College Trail Campus. In the first 10 years of operation, over 1000 learners participated in courses offered. A total of 30 individuals earned their high school diplomas.
The Refresh Education and Learning (REAL) Committee was formed in early 1997 to be responsible for the development and ongoing operation of The Learning Centre. It was a joint committee with representatives from Teck Trail Operations management, and USW locals 480 and 9705.
In 2006 the Inspiring Wellness Committee was formed as an employee engagement program. An external consultant was originally contracted to assist in getting the programs off the ground. During the first 3 years of the committee’s term, Heart@Work and Steps Out programs were initiated. Additionally many crew talks on health issues, such as nutrition, blood pressure, cancer awareness, and aging parents were offered to employees. Over the past 2 years, additional partnerships have been established to include other local businesses and recreation groups.
In 2009, the two committees came together forming the Inspiring Wellness and Learning (IWL) Committee. The goals of the two individual committees were very similar and focused on improving employee’s lives through offering Skills for Life in a number of different areas. The vision of the combined committee is to promote the well being of employees and their families in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.
